Mannequins are being fitted with face recognition software to collect information on shoppers, in stores such as Benetton. Using the same technology employed at airports, the software can record the age, gender and race of shoppers, as well as the time spent in store and browsing at certain displays.
Without having to stop customers and ask questions, this will provide companies with informative feedback on store layouts, window displays and the demographic of their customers. That information should help them create more inviting displays for shoppers and ensure their products are relevant to their key customers. (It’s brilliant for marketing, but I have to admit I’d find it a bit creepy if I was admiring the clothes on a mannequin and saw it looking back at me!)
